It is not quite true that this will be the first solar roadway concept, but we should not be surprised if France is indeed the first to install a commercial scale version of roads with imbedded solar cells. Check out the video, and read more here.
1000km of solar roads could provide power to 5 million people. What is different about the French approach is that the solar cells can be applied directly to existing roads without a full infrastructure rebuild.
