Underwater view is not clear

If you missed it today, this underwater diving expedition for ABC news by Philippe Cousteau Jr. and Sam Champion is worth watching. I have a foreboding that humans will sacrifice just about anything to acquire the last drops of oil, no matter the risks or the alternatives. I am not sure why we are so terrified of changing the energy picture.

It’s not that we’re afraid, it’s that the economics drive the politics. As long as BP, other oil players, and their compliant Congressional cadre bring in more money notwithstanding these disasters they have no incentive to change. This is the real reason for the intransigence on climate change–implementing legislation that prices carbon would break the absolutist defense around never adding any costs to dirty energy production. If that can be added so can the costs to the commons. The last thing the oil giants want is a truly level competitive playing field, for it would reveal that our cheap oil is not actually our cheapest choice.
